The long war is over. But for the children of Berlin, hope is in short supply. Russia plans to brutally annex the city and force all other allied nations out. To do this they have blocked all shipments of food into the city. The defeated Germans are starving, and American attempts to bring in food via one small airport are incredibly difficult and losing public support. As the Berlin Airlift flounders, the future grows ever more bleak. How can you dream about a better future when all you know is war?
Set shortly after the end of World War II, a moment in history when the suffering of the common people of Germany was great, tensions were high, and another war (this time between the Allies and Russia) seemed very likely, this play tells the true story of a small act of kindness by one American pilot, which tipped the scale, changed hearts at home and abroad, and paved a way for peace.
